Philosophy

Heward Investment Management Inc. employs an investment style characterized as growth at a reasonable price (GARP) with a value bias. It adopts a long-term investment horizon and seeks investment opportunities with the following attributes:

Predictable earnings

Cash flow growth

Stable income stream

We work closely with our clients to ensure that their needs are translated into investment objectives. This philosophy has provided clients with greater diversification and managed risk.

Process

Heward Investment Management Inc. utilizes a disciplined investment management process. The Investment Committee designates investment mandates, oversees the due diligence process, and has the final authority on all investment decisions. Decision-making is governed by a team approach to ensure that a diverse set of opinions is considered. The investment management process consists of four dimensions:

ASSET ALLOCATION

The Investment Committee surveys macroeconomic variables to determine the strategic asset allocation involving cash and cash equivalents, equities, and fixed income securities (bonds, preferred shares). Tactical allocations are utilized to take advantage of short to medium term trends.

GEOGRAPHIC ALLOCATION

The Investment Committee sets ranges for investments in Canada, the United States, and globally based on said macroeconomic variables with particular focus on exchange rate movements, long-term interest rate fluctuations, and country specific data.

SECTOR ALLOCATION

Macroeconomic variables are also used to determine fundamentally attractive sectors that are entering cyclical and secular up-trends and provide a steady income stream over the long-term. Within each sector, the top trend beneficiaries are selected to form a focused list of securities.

SECURITY SELECTION

The process consists of four elements:

  • Industry Overview
  • Fundamental Analysis
  • Management Review
  • Valuation

Working together: What to expect

Understanding individual investment goals and objectives

Every client is different and so are their investment goals and objectives. In our initial meeting, we will work towards a complete understanding of your short and long term investment goals; including your timeframe, income requirements, liquidity, risk tolerance and expenses.

Implementing strategy

Once your objectives have been determined, we can decide on the proper asset allocation of equities and fixed income, and develop your investment policy statement (IPS). The IPS serves as a guideline for all decisions regarding your portfolio and your Portfolio Manager will work within its guidelines.

Ongoing Portfolio Maintenance and Monitoring

We consistently monitor and review the portfolios of every client, as both the needs of our clients and market conditions change. You will meet regularly with your Portfolio Manager to discuss these changes and implement appropriate changes to your portfolio. We ensure you are comfortable and confident with decisions effecting your investments.

We also connect frequently through a combination of conference calls, webinars and investment outlook events.

Heward Investment Management Inc. prides itself on a track record of exemplary corporate social responsibility. As a good corporate citizen, the firm approaches its community with the same rigour that factors prominently in its investment philosophy.
